Speed humps are a frequently requested traffic calming measure that is a rounded device across the roadway that causes vehicles to reduce speed. They are sometimes broken up to allow a clear path for bicyclists, and contain signage and paint markings so that they are visible. They are typically used on residential streets where there is a desire to slow vehicle speeds.

Process Overview

Speed humps are typically installed as part of a traffic calming project.

For more information on the traffic calming process, see Traffic Calming Overview.

Traffic calming devices including speed humps and cushions require approval by an SFMTA hearing officer.
